Rayon- Blow Away
By David Demarest |
With
six songs already featured in two motion pictures released
in 2004 (“The Job” and “The Hollow”),
Rayon is proving itself to be the perfect fit for such
a medium, where their suggestive textures can be used
to enhance the cinematic experience.

IT’S RARE TO SHOW UP TO A GIG
with more than one band on the bill
and not be bored to tears by the first
act. Once or twice, in my hundreds of
shows attended, an opening band has
actually horrified me. The potential
to be totally blown away by the
opener is infinitely smaller, but on
March 10 at the Galaxy in Santa Ana,
Rayon accomplished just that.

Wrapped
in Rayon
Rayon
can thank Echo and the Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant
for its name. After opening for the British band a couple
of years ago, Walter Ensign expressed bewilderment about
the band's name. " 'Why don't you call your band
Rayon?' " Ensign remembers Sergeant telling him.
" 'It's one word, and it sounds British.' "
And it stuck.
Though
the name suggests Ensign's trio sounds synthetic, Rayon
is anything but. With the frontman's flanged vocals
poking through lush guitars, Rayon's music seems as
organic as an ocean swell. "We're still trying
to define" the sound, Ensign says, "but I
love layers, even if it's just to experiment. Layers
of strings, layers of guitars ... I like doing trippy
things."
Rayon's
self-released EP doesn't reflect the energy of a live
set, which offers some neck-snapping surges. It figures
to get even stronger with the addition of drummer Brian
Keats to a lineup that includes peripatetic bassist
Mimi Star. Rayon opens for Ian Hunter tonight at the
Galaxy in Santa.

| Las
Vegas Review Journal |
"The
excellent band Rayon plays the Cooler Lounge. The Los
Angeles psychedelic band's ambient rock music has etchings
from the pop-melody past in it (ELO, George Harrison).
But it does have a contemporary, almost trip hop sound."

Listening
to the indie-Rockers of RAYON, It's hard not to think
of timetravel:
They roll from heavily textured 80s rock a la New order
into melodically sweeping,
jingle-jangling 60s psychedelic

Releases EP "Blow Away" |
|
|
Walter
Ensign releases EP out of frustration of how long the recording
is taking in the studio. Ensign decides to release a selection
of songs from demos as an EP called "Blow Away"
Including the song "Don't Worry" with Brian Keats
Playing Drums. - Unfortunately Walter didn't have the opportunity
to go back and mixed the music before releasing the EP, most
of the session where missing and had to release the demos
as is.
Basically
the EP is a demo that was promoted to EP status and is a collection
of rough mixes that were recorded in rayon’s rehearsal
studio, downtown LA with just sm57 microphones and adats.
The Recordings are not studio quality recordings and the approach
on these recording was to just keep the first take and move
on, even if there was a mistake, we thought "its not
the Album, just a demo."
You will hear different layers in some of
the songs, during the work in progress process, "I like
experimenting with different sound and instruments and at
mix time weed out stuff that doesn't work on the final mix.”
All the sounds in there are all natural, real violins and
mandolins on “Don’t Worry” performed by
Stevie Black. -
"Blow
Away" EP is self released and due out soon.
